This major provides students with a real world, hands-on program that bridges the
gap between computer scientists and general users. The Information Technology Program
is multidisciplinary, and involves the Departments of Mathematics and Computer Science;
Electronics and Computer Technology; Management Information Systems; Art; Geography, Geology,
and Anthropology; and Communication. Students majoring in information technology will be
prepared for entry-level positions such as database administrator, applications developer,
programmer analyst, and network administrator.
ACADEMIC PROGRAMS
Degree Offered
Students completing the program will earn a bachelor of science degree in information
technology. Candidates for the degree must successfully complete the University requirement
of a minimum of 124 semester hours of credit, which includes General Education course work,
the requirements for the major, and open electives. Transfer students should consult with
an advisor to determine how their transfer credit can be applied. Articulation agreements
with Ivy Tech State College, Vincennes University, Lake Land College, and Illinois Eastern
Community Colleges facilitate the transfer of courses from those institutions.
Program Opportunities
The Information Technology Program considers advising to be an important part of a
student's academic program. Students will work with the program coordinator and advisor
until they select a specialization track within the major, at which time the student will
be assigned a faculty advisor from the area of specialization. Since students who work
closely with their advisors are more likely to meet their goals and achieve academic
success, all information technology majors are encouraged to maintain good contact with
their faculty academic advisor. All students are required to confer with their
advisors prior to each semester's registration, and to participate in departmental
assessment reviews. Students are encouraged to explore the various opportunities for
financial aid—scholarships, grants, and loans--and to consider co-ops and internships
that offer actual experience in their selected major and track. The information
technology Web site should be consulted for the e-mail addresses and phone numbers
of information technology advisors.
